Minimum Wage Increase
The third increment of the federal minimum wage increase goes into effect July 24, 2009 bringing the federal minimum wage to $7.25 per hour from the current $6.55 per hour that was mandated last year. This is the third and final increment of the increase, which was enacted in 2007.
The U.S. Department of Labor has produced a minimum wage poster that reflects the new increases. Posters can be downloaded from the department’s Website at:
http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/posters/flsa.htm for English
http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/posters/flsaspan.htm for Spanish
and http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/posters/flsaspan.htm for Chinese.
Every employer that has employees subject to the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) minimum wage provisions is required to post a notice explaining the act. The poster must be in a conspicuous place in the place of business where employees are able to read it.
In addition, there was no increase in the cash wage for tipped employees in those states that still follow federal law, Oklahoma being one of those states. Therefore in Oklahoma the tip credit remains at $2.13/hour and tipped employees must report enough earned tips to bring their wage up to a minimum of $7.25/hour.
